Gavin M. Faull: Steering Swiss-Belhotel International Toward a New Era of Conscious Global Hospitality

Gavin M. Faull: Steering Swiss-Belhotel International Toward a New Era of Conscious Global Hospitality
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

At a time when hospitality is being reshaped by digital acceleration, sustainability demands, and evolving traveller expectations, Gavin M. Faull, Chairman and President of Swiss-Belhotel International (SBI), stands at the forefront of purposeful global expansion.

Headquartered in Hong Kong, Swiss-Belhotel International has grown into one of the world’s most dynamic hotel management groups, with a strong presence across Asia Pacific, Africa, and Europe. Rather than pursuing expansion for scale alone, SBI’s strategy is rooted in disciplined growth, long-term owner partnerships, and operational excellence.

A Focused Growth Strategy Toward 530 by 2033

The future of Swiss-Belhotel International is clearly defined: surpass 530 operating properties by 2033 through strategic, quality-led expansion.

Central to this ambition is a robust and carefully structured pipeline. SBI is actively accelerating development across:

  • China, Malaysia, Thailand, The Philippines and Vietnam, where demand for internationally managed hotels continues to expand across both tier-one and emerging cities.
  • Indonesia, SBI’s strongest market, where expansion into secondary and tertiary cities is unlocking high potential destinations.
  • Australasia, the Middle East and Africa, where selective entries strengthen brand positioning in stable, high-value markets.

Rather than dispersing resources broadly, SBI follows a “cluster strategy” – deepening presence within key regions to build operational efficiencies, brand recognition, and stronger owner support systems. This model enhances economies of scale while maintaining local agility.

The pipeline spans multiple segments, including upscale hotels, resorts, serviced residences, mixed-use developments, and lifestyle brands. Future developments emphasize mixed-use ecosystems integrating hospitality with retail, wellness, and residential components – responding to modern urban and leisure trends.

SBI is also advancing its eco-conscious luxury, healthy and wellness brand, Māua, expanding the concept of sustainable hospitality inspired by stewardship and environmental guardianship. New projects under this brand will reinforce SBI’s commitment to responsible growth.

Technology integration forms another pillar of the 2033 vision. AI-driven guest personalization, enhanced loyalty through the Swiss-Belexecutive Card, smart-room systems, and data-led operational optimization will elevate guest experiences while improving owner returns.

Building a Future-Ready Hospitality Group

Looking ahead, Swiss-Belhotel International aims not only to reach 530 properties but to become the most owner focused global hospitality management company in its segment.

Investment in talent development through SBI Academy, digital transformation initiatives, and long-term regional partnerships will underpin this evolution.

Faull believes the future of hospitality lies in balancing technology with human connection. While digital innovation enhances efficiency, service excellence remains deeply personal.

“When owners partner with us, they are partnering with a family-led organization committed to long-term success,” Faull notes.

With a disciplined pipeline, diversified expansion strategy, and a clear 2033 target, Swiss-Belhotel International is not simply growing – it is redefining how sustainable, owner aligned global hospitality can scale with purpose.

A Leader Shaped by Discipline and Perspective

Faull’s leadership blends financial discipline with hands-on industry experience. His background as a Chartered Accountant continues to inform strategic expansion, ensuring growth remains financially resilient and sustainable.

His approach is pragmatic: strengthen foundations before scaling. “Growth must be supported by capability, culture, and capital discipline,” he emphasizes.

Vision for the Future: Quality-Led Global Expansion

Looking ahead, Faull envisions Swiss-Belhotel International becoming the world’s most owner-focused and guest-centric hospitality management group. Central to this vision is a strategic expansion model based on “clustering” – deepening presence in select markets rather than spreading resources thinly across regions.

In 2026 and beyond, Swiss-Belhotel International is aggressively expanding in Australasia, Africa, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, The Middle East, The Philippines and Vietnam, where demand for international management standards continues to surge. At the same time, The Group is strengthening its leadership position in Indonesia, its strongest market, by entering secondary and tertiary cities – often overlooked destinations that Faull refers to as “hidden gems.”

By becoming the first international brand in these markets, Swiss-Belhotel International not only captures early-mover advantage but also contributes meaningfully to local economic development.

Equally important is the evolution of the Swiss-Belexecutive Card (SBEC) loyalty program. By leveraging data analytics and personalization, the group aims to deliver hyper-relevant guest experiences – anticipating needs rather than reacting to them.

Leadership Development in a Changing World

For Faull, leadership growth is a continuous process rooted in listening, learning, and humility. He spends considerable time visiting properties, engaging with frontline teams, and understanding the guest experience firsthand.

“The real intelligence of hospitality lies with the people on the ground,” he says. “Front-line staff understand guests better than any dashboard ever could.”

He also draws inspiration from the next generation – particularly his three sons, Mr. Matthew D. Faull (Senior VP – IT, E-Commerce and Distribution), Mr. Oliver R. Faull (Senior VP – Australia and New Zealand), Mr. Edward J.L. Faull (Senior VP – Group Technical Services and Projects), all of whom are actively involved in the business. Their insights into technology, e-commerce, and next generation travel behavior help keep the organization agile and future-ready.

When asked about gaps among emerging leaders today, Faull points to a lack of resilience and hands-on experience.

“There is a tendency to rely too heavily on data while overlooking emotional intelligence,” he observes. “Hospitality is fundamentally about human connection. You cannot manage it through spreadsheets alone.”

He also cautions against short-term thinking, advocating instead for relationship-building that spans decades rather than quarters.

Hiring for Attitude, Training for Excellence

At Swiss-Belhotel International, people remain the cornerstone of success. Faull is guided by a simple yet powerful hiring philosophy: “We hire for attitude and train for skills.”

Among the most critical traits he values are Passion and Professionalism™. We combine the heritage and professionalism of Swiss hospitality with the passion and service of Asia.

Curiosity, he adds, is often the defining marker of future leaders. “If someone is more interested in the ‘why’ than the ‘what,’ they have the potential to grow far beyond their current role.”

Navigating Crisis with Transparency and Courage

The most defining challenge of Faull’s career came during the COVID-19 pandemic, when global hospitality operations faced unprecedented disruption. Overnight, Swiss-Belhotel International shifted from traditional hotel management to operating quarantine facilities amid a collapse in travel demand.

Yet, the greatest challenge was not operational – it was human. Difficult decisions around salary reductions and temporary closures weighed heavily, particularly with tens of thousands of livelihoods at stake.

In a deeply personal move, Faull chose to sell key family assets to fund operations and protect jobs during the crisis. The organization survived not through corporate detachment, but through transparency and family sacrifice.

“We spoke openly with our owners and staff,” he recalls. “By showing vulnerability and commitment, we built trust that still defines our culture today.” The result was not just survival, but a stronger, more unified organization poised for accelerated post pandemic growth.

Stewardship, Culture, and Daily Fulfillment

As Executive Director, Chairman, and President, Faull sees his role as both strategic steward and cultural guardian. He sets the long-term direction of the group, nurtures investor and owner relationships, and ensures operational alignment with Swiss-Belhotel International’s guiding philosophy.

The most rewarding part of his daily routine, however, lies in connection – whether through early morning calls with regional teams or walking through newly opened properties.

“There’s a moment in hospitality when a guest smiles because someone went the extra mile,” he says. “That’s the real win.”

Values That Shape a Legacy

Integrity, empowerment, and sustainability are not abstract ideals for Faull – they are embedded in every initiative Swiss-Belhotel International undertakes. From its owner-focused management model to the SBI Academy, which trains staff to think like entrepreneurs, empowerment is central to the group’s DNA.

Sustainability finds expression through Māua, the group’s eco-luxury initiative inspired by the Māori concept of Kaitiakitanga – guardianship of the land. Māua demonstrates that luxury and environmental responsibility can coexist, redefining conscious travel for a new generation. Māua comes from the spirit from his family dairy farm in New Zealand.

Over the next three to five years, Faull envisions Swiss-Belhotel International reaching the 530 by 2033 while emerging as a leader in digital hospitality. Advanced AI systems will be integrated to anticipate guest needs – quietly enhancing service without diminishing the human touch.

Expansion of the Māua brand into China, the Middle East and the Pacific is also on the horizon, positioning Swiss-Belhotel International as a pioneer of “conscious luxury” in the mid-2020s.

Reflecting on his journey, Faull emphasizes that Swiss-Belhotel’s success is, above all, a family and people-driven achievement.

“When owners partner with us, they’re not just signing with a corporation,” he says. “They’re partnering with a family that truly has skin in the game.”

Recently honored as the “Most Outstanding and Distinguished Leader in Global Hospitality & Innovation 2026,” Faull remains characteristically humble, crediting the award to the more than 10,000 team members who bring Swiss-Belhotel International’s vision to life every day.

In an industry built on service, connection, and trust, his leadership stands as a testament to the enduring power of values-driven growth – making him, without question, one of the most remarkable business leaders to watch in 2026.
