With a steadfast commitment to excellence and people-first leadership, Bala V. Sathyanarayanan is driving impactful change at Greif, Inc., where he serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. Bala’s vision is simple yet profound: to create a highly engaged, high-performing global workforce that powers Greif’s mission to be the best-performing customer service company in the world.
His journey from Chennai, India, to the C-suite of a Fortune 1000 company is a testament to global leadership grounded in empathy, agility, and relentless purpose.
A Global Career with Purposeful Beginnings
Born and raised in Chennai, India’s fourth-largest metropolis, Bala’s professional path began at United Technologies/Otis Elevator Company as a graduate trainee. That early experience offered him not only technical knowledge but also an invaluable international lens, including a brief stint in Malaysia.
His leadership journey accelerated through pivotal roles at Coca-Cola, Avaya, Hewlett-Packard, and Xerox Corporation—each opportunity sharpening his ability to lead transformation at scale. Before joining Greif, he oversaw global HR and business transformation for Xerox’s Technology Business, managing a diverse workforce of over 40,000 employees across 145 countries.
Bala’s academic portfolio reflects his global perspective: a Bachelor’s in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the University of Madras, a Master’s in Human Resource Management from Rutgers University, an MBA in General Management, and advanced leadership training from Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program.
Greif, Inc.: Packaging Innovation with a Human Touch
Greif is a global leader in industrial packaging, operating in more than 40 countries with over 225 production facilities. The company’s mission is to package and protect essential goods for communities around the world—ensuring materials arrive safely, securely, and sustainably.
But Bala is quick to point out that Greif’s true differentiator isn’t its footprint or product lines—it’s its people. “Our team members are the heart of this business. They live the Greif Way, which is built on respect, trust, and service,” he shares.
This people-centric philosophy is ingrained in everything Greif does—from the way it hires and trains, to the way it partners with clients to meet evolving global needs.
Redefining HR as a Strategic Powerhouse
As Greif’s CHRO, Bala does more than manage human resources—he shapes organizational destiny. He works closely with the CEO, board members, and global leadership to architect the company’s workforce strategy and operational culture.
A strong believer in employee engagement, Bala emphasizes recognition and human connection. “When you take care of your people, they take care of the customers. And when your customers are happy, the business thrives,” he says.
Bala sees himself as a “relator”—a leader who thrives on building genuine connections across borders and backgrounds. Whether mentoring young talent in Ohio or visiting facilities in Europe or Asia, his approach remains the same: listen actively, recognize contributions, and lead with empathy.
Driving Transformation with the ‘Build to Last’ Mindset
Bala’s leadership philosophy is anchored in what he calls the Build to Last strategy—an approach that balances current operational excellence with long-term resilience.
“We’re not just solving today’s challenges. We’re creating the systems, structures, and talent pipelines that will serve us five, ten, even twenty years from now,” he explains.
Under Bala’s leadership, Greif is investing in upskilling, leadership development, and DE&I (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion). His goal is to build a purpose-driven, performance-oriented culture that enables every team member to bring their full potential to work.
Empowering Future Leaders: The Champion’s Mindset
For those just stepping into leadership, Bala offers practical wisdom: “Lead with humility. Be curious. Don’t shy away from saying ‘I don’t know.’”
He encourages emerging professionals to embrace what he calls a Champion’s Mindset—a blend of grit, continuous learning, and a service-first attitude. “We seek team members who are intrinsically motivated, who inspire those around them to aim higher,” he notes.
He urges young professionals not to fear vulnerability. “Ask the tough questions—how does this business unit generate margins? How do the pieces fit together? Leaning in is how you grow.”
Creating a Legacy of Impact
For Bala, leadership is not just about driving metrics—it’s about impacting lives. His aspiration is to help shape communities, inside and outside Greif, where people can thrive.
“Our purpose is bigger than packaging. We’re helping economies move, keeping supply chains flowing, and enabling communities to access essentials. Behind that mission is a workforce that cares deeply,” he says.
As Greif expands its global footprint, Bala’s focus remains clear: nurture a world-class workforce that can drive growth, innovation, and legendary customer service—today and for generations to come.
Final Thoughts: A Leader Who Serves to Lead
“Be a servant leader with the mindset of a champion,” Bala concludes. “When you lead with purpose, when you genuinely care, you don’t just transform organizations—you transform lives.”
