Below are the highlights of an insightful conversation between CEO Affairs and Kimberlee Shelley:
Tell us about yourself—who are you beyond your professional role?
I wear many hats. I’m not just an HR leader—I’m also an author, a speaker, a community advocate, and a political activist. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to receive various accolades that reflect my dedication to both business and social causes, including:
- Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT) Business Person of The Year
- RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award
- CIBWE Top 100 Black Women to Watch
- Brampton’s Top 40 Under 40
I was also honored with a commemorative bench at Humber College (North Campus) in 2021.
When I’m not focused on my professional endeavors, I’m an outgoing, adventurous person who values family, faith, and giving back to the community. My passion for empowering women and advocating for social justice drives everything I do, both inside and outside the workplace.
What was your journey before joining Universal Staffing?
Before my current role as Branch Manager at Universal Staffing, I explored various avenues in education and community service. I studied paralegal education and contributed through pro-bono work. My career in staffing began in two different organizations: first as an HR administrator and then as a staffing consultant. Over time, I progressed to senior consultant and account manager positions, which gave me valuable experience in both recruitment and business development.
Alongside my professional work, I have always been deeply involved in community service. I’ve served on multiple boards and collaborated with grassroots organizations, as well as various levels of government, to advocate for equity, racism awareness, women’s empowerment, and religious freedoms.
More recently, I expanded my role by taking on an advisory position with Graham McGregor, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Brampton North, where I focus on stakeholder relations.
What do you believe has contributed most to your success?
Success is not just about professional accomplishments—it’s about staying grounded. For me, hard work, setting clear goals, and maintaining focus have been key. However, what truly anchors me is my faith, which gives me the strength to overcome challenges and the motivation to keep moving forward. I also value the importance of “paying it forward” and supporting those around me.
What are the core services provided by Universal Staffing, and how does the company maintain its competitive edge?
For over 20 years, Universal Staffing has been dedicated to helping individuals discover their true calling by connecting them with career opportunities across various sectors. Whether the job is temporary, contract, or permanent, we specialize in matching candidates with roles where they can thrive.
What sets us apart is our ability to understand the unique needs of our clients. By gaining deep insights into their core business, we tailor our staffing solutions to ensure satisfaction for both employers and employees. We go beyond just filling positions—we focus on matching talent with opportunities that are both professionally and personally fulfilling for individuals.
Our approach allows us to provide exceptional value in industries where the demand for skilled workers is high. Whatever your staffing needs are, we’re here to deliver a solution that works for you.
What do you believe are the most important aspects of company culture?
Company culture is one of the most complex and significant aspects of any business. It’s not just about putting policies in place—it’s about creating an environment where people feel empowered to collaborate and contribute toward a shared goal.
A strong company culture is built on mutual respect, transparency, and open communication. It’s important for leaders to identify the key drivers that will shape this culture and prioritize them accordingly. I believe that a successful organization cultivates a space where individuals not only work together but feel personally invested in the company’s mission.
For me, creating a culture of growth, inclusion, and empowerment has always been the foundation of any successful team.
How significant is innovation to your company’s success?
Innovation is at the heart of everything we do at Universal Staffing. Whether we’re refining our recruitment methods or adopting new technologies to improve efficiency, we are constantly looking for ways to innovate and enhance our services. Innovation allows us to remain agile in a fast-evolving market, ensuring we meet the changing needs of our clients and candidates alike.
We focus on three types of innovation:
- Revenue-model innovation—finding new ways to generate value.
- Business-model innovation—rethinking how we deliver our services.
- Industry-model innovation—challenging the norms of the staffing industry itself.
These innovations help us stay competitive and ensure we can continue delivering top-tier solutions to our clients.
Do organizations rely more on individual heroics or team processes?
While individual contributions are important, I firmly believe that sustainable success comes from strong, well-defined processes and systems. Individual efforts may shine in certain situations, but it’s the processes that allow organizations to scale and function smoothly in the long term.
At Universal Staffing, we prioritize developing systems that ensure consistency and efficiency, empowering our team to perform at their best, collectively.
What are your main responsibilities as Branch Manager? What do you enjoy most about your role?
As Branch Manager, I am responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the branch, managing staff, ensuring efficient recruitment processes, and implementing policies that maintain a high standard of service. I also spend a significant amount of time on business development, fostering relationships with both clients and employees, and ensuring positive morale across the team.
The most rewarding part of my job is the impact we have on people’s lives. Seeing someone land a job that enables them to support their family, grow their career, and build a better future is incredibly fulfilling. It’s even more gratifying to witness these individuals evolve and progress within the company or beyond.
What advice would you give to someone stepping into leadership for the first time?
Taking on a leadership role is both an exciting and challenging endeavor. My advice would be to approach it with humility, stay open to learning, and never underestimate the importance of listening.
Here are a few key principles for new leaders:
- Embrace a growth mindset.
- Build strong relationships with your team and peers.
- Initiate one-on-one meetings with your team members early on.
- Master the art of managing up (communicating effectively with senior leaders).
- Seek out quick wins to build confidence and momentum.
Lastly, remember that leadership isn’t just about giving orders—it’s about inspiring others, being adaptable, and constantly learning from your experiences.
Kimberlee Shelley’s dedication to her craft, her community, and her faith makes her a remarkable leader. Whether guiding individuals toward meaningful careers or pushing for societal change, she embodies the values of empowerment and service to others.
