Professor Liz Bacon serves as the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Abertay University, bringing with her an impressive portfolio of academic and professional achievements. She holds several prestigious honors, including being a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA), a Chartered Engineer (CEng), a Chartered Scientist (CSci), a Chartered IT Professional (CITP), and a Fellow of both the BCS – The Chartered Institute for IT (FBCS) and the Institute of Science & Technology (FIScT). She is also a professional member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Who is Liz Bacon, beyond her job title?
I strive to remain consistent in both my personal and professional life. Whether I’m at the university or spending time with friends and family, I aim to be approachable, thoughtful, and receptive to the views of others. Strong, respectful relationships are the foundation of success in any context. I believe that listening openly, yet knowing when to challenge ideas constructively, has helped me grow as a leader and as a person.
What shaped your journey before joining Abertay University?
My background is rooted in computer science research, and I’ve had the privilege of speaking internationally on vital topics such as the digital transformation of education, preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and increasing diversity in STEM fields—especially among women and underrepresented groups.
Throughout my academic career, I’ve collaborated closely with policymakers, industry leaders, and professional organizations to address global IT skill shortages. I’ve been recognized as a National Teaching Fellow, and I’ve served as President of both BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, and EQANIE, the European Quality Assurance Network for Informatics Education. I’ve also chaired the BCS Academy of Computing and the Council of Professors and Heads of Computing, and I currently serve on the boards of the Bletchley Park Trust and V&A Dundee.
I joined Abertay University in 2018 as Deputy Principal and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, where I initially oversaw initiatives related to research, teaching, partnerships, and digital strategy. I stepped into the role of Principal in 2022 and continue to lead our innovation-driven transformation.

We’ve earned a reputation as one of the UK’s top institutions for video game education—our programs consistently rank among the best globally. But our academic reach is much broader, offering degrees in fields like mental health nursing, civil engineering, business analytics, and ethical hacking. We emphasize hands-on, real-world learning that prepares students for success beyond graduation.
What has driven your personal and professional success?
Our ability to stay closely connected to student needs, community expectations, and industry demands has been key. Abertay’s agility as a smaller university allows us to respond quickly to technological and societal changes, enabling us to offer impactful, future-ready opportunities for our students.

What advice would you offer to first-time leaders?
Lead with courage, but back your decisions with data, experience, and collaborative input. Communication is key—be transparent with your team and stakeholders. Surround yourself with individuals who are not only skilled but also aligned with your values. And never forget: your colleagues are your most valuable asset. They embody the organization’s culture, and their insights and energy are essential to its success.
