A great hotel manager understands that delivering outstanding customer service is the key to success. However, it takes more than just excellent service skills to lead a thriving hospitality team. Effective leadership in hospitality management also requires the ability to build a cohesive and efficient team that can drive operational excellence.
Alessandro Redaelli is a seasoned hotel professional with over 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry. Currently serving as the General Manager of Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers, Alessandro has honed his skills and gained global exposure, working with prestigious brands such as Hilton, Mövenpick, and Starwood. His journey into the world of hospitality began in Italy, where he earned a diploma in Kitchen & Service, followed by Hotel Management studies in Switzerland. “One of my first memories of working in hospitality dates back to my early days in Italy. From there, I embarked on a journey that took me all over the world,” he shares.
A Passion for Service and Global Leadership
With a genuine passion for hospitality, Alessandro has built a reputation as a dynamic and approachable leader. His career has taken him to numerous countries, from Europe to the Middle East, where he has opened and managed top-tier hotels. One notable milestone was his involvement in opening the Kempinski Nikoolskaya in Moscow in 2013. Afterward, he moved to the UAE, working in both Ras Al-Khaimah and Dubai, before settling in Abu Dhabi.
Alessandro is known for his warm personality and strong commitment to guest satisfaction. His extensive experience has allowed him to seamlessly blend the technical and interpersonal aspects of hotel management, making him an exceptional leader. He believes that successful hotels are built on people—both guests and staff—and strives to foster a culture of collaboration, respect, and continuous improvement.
Core Values: Putting People First
Alessandro is aligned with the core values of Conrad Abu Dhabi, which emphasize the importance of people. He believes in the power of motivation and leadership to inspire others, whether they are colleagues or guests. “In hospitality, it’s not just about providing a place to stay; it’s about creating memorable experiences for our guests. Our team’s job is to anticipate their needs and offer personalized services that elevate their stay,” he explains.
For Alessandro, success is driven by creating a work environment where the team feels valued and motivated. He is dedicated to upholding integrity, transparency, and a strong sense of purpose, both in his personal life and in his professional role.
Challenges in Hotel Management: Patience and Persistence
As a seasoned hotel manager, Alessandro is no stranger to challenges. Managing large-scale projects, coordinating with multiple teams, and overseeing the complex logistics of hotel operations can be demanding. “The process of turning a plan into reality can take time, and it’s often a slow burn,” he admits. “Patience is key, but it’s also essential to stay persistent and constantly strive for improvement. You can’t rest on your laurels.”
Alessandro also places high value on honesty and integrity, both in business and in life. He believes that these principles are essential for fostering strong relationships and maintaining a positive work environment. When problems arise, Alessandro handles them with professionalism and grace, ensuring that all parties involved feel heard and respected.
Breaking Free from the Routine
Alessandro does not subscribe to rigid routines. He believes that sticking to a repetitive schedule can lead people to lose touch with the present moment. To counteract this, he starts each day with an espresso while catching up on global news, which sets a productive tone for his workday. “How you begin your day sets the tone for everything that follows,” he says.
To maintain a healthy work-life balance, Alessandro prioritizes quality time with his wife, Larissa, especially on weekends. “We live alone now since our sons are studying abroad, and it’s important that we dedicate time to each other. Our weekends are sacred to us,” he shares. By spending time with family and engaging in activities that recharge him, Alessandro ensures that he remains at his best both personally and professionally.
Cycling is another activity Alessandro enjoys during the week. It provides a refreshing change of scenery and helps him stay physically active. Often, he’s joined by colleagues such as Carmine, the Director of Food & Beverage, and Nicholas, the Director of Engineering, which also fosters team spirit and camaraderie.
Defining Success: Building Relationships
For Alessandro, success is not defined by titles or accolades, but by the strength of the relationships one builds. “The true measure of success is how well you connect with others,” he explains. Whether it’s with family, friends, or colleagues, Alessandro believes that surrounding oneself with a strong support system is crucial for personal and professional growth.
“I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who guided me through my career. Their wisdom and support helped me grow in ways I never could have imagined. Now, I strive to give back to others in the same way,” he says. Alessandro’s philosophy is rooted in the idea of mentorship and giving back to the community that has supported him. He believes that by empowering others and offering guidance, leaders can create lasting, positive change.
Empathy and Understanding: Stepping into the Shoes of Others
Alessandro’s approach to leadership is centered around empathy. He firmly believes that a successful team is only as good as the individuals who make it up. By getting to know his team members personally—understanding their hobbies, families, and interests—he fosters an environment of mutual respect and trust. “A simple, meaningful conversation can go a long way,” he says.
As a leader, Alessandro views his role as the voice and unifying force of his team. He emphasizes the importance of standing up for team values and being persistent when advocating for others. “As a leader, you set the tone. When your team encounters challenges, you need to be there with them, helping them navigate through it,” he adds.
To better understand the daily challenges his team faces, Alessandro makes it a point to step into their roles whenever possible. Whether it’s working as a bellboy or assisting as a breakfast barista, he believes this hands-on approach provides valuable insights into the operations of the hotel and the needs of his staff.
Advice for Aspiring Leaders
Alessandro’s advice for future leaders is to lead with authenticity and be proactive in building strong relationships. “As a leader, your team looks to you for support and guidance,” he says. “You have to lead by example, be persistent in overcoming obstacles, and show your team that you’re there for them every step of the way.”
He encourages leaders to actively listen, foster a sense of belonging, and always seek opportunities for personal and team development. “When you empower others and make them feel valued, success will follow,” he concludes.
